Past Continuous Passive

The characteristic of the Past Continuous Passive is the past form of the verb to be was/were and, additional, the being form.

Declarative sentences

Subject + WAS/WERE + BEING + Past Participle (+ by...)

Examples:

  • The car was being repaired for 5 hours.
  • The guitar was being played by my friend.
  • The cats were being fed by my sister.

Negative sentences

Subject + WASN'T/WEREN'T + BEING + Past Participle (+ by...)

Examples:

  • The car wasn't being repaired for 5 hours.
  • The guitar wasn't being played by my friend.
  • The cats weren't being fed by my sister.

Questions

WAS/WERE + Subject + BEING + Past Participle (+ by...)

Examples:

  • Was the car being repaired for 5 hours?
  • Was the guitar being played by my friend?
  • Were the cats being fed by my sister?

Positive answers

  • Yes, it was/Yes, they were.

Negative answers

  • No, it wasn't/No, they weren't.
Asking questions we can also use so called wh-questions, e.g.:
  • Who were the cats being fed by?
  • What was being played by my friend?
